What a show these guys put on, railing and railing against the establishment is washington. It would be impressive -- if you had no idea that these guys have been running things for the past eight years.
I mean, you'd think all GW Bush did was appear at the site of the WTC bombing, then hand control to a democrat. Or that the GOP Congress was tossed out around 1994, instead of being in full control until two years ago (and basically in a tie since.)
But no one was sadder than the once-rebellious John McCain, who's going to go to Washington and throw the bums out.
Well, except for himself. And other GOP bums. What a farce.
We expected them to seek distance from President Bush and ignore the very existance of Dick Cheney. But who expected the GOP to seek distance from itself?
McCain said the GOP was changed by washington, like the very town is a malevolent spirit. They aren't corrupt or immoral at heart. They've just been possessed. Call it the Washingtonville Horror.
I suppose you could think he was brave. He admitted they've lost the trust of the american people, something the white-faced well-to-do crowd didn't like.
But then he had the gall to say, elect me president and we'll work to regain your trust.
Sorry John. You have to earn trust before you get elected president.
Besides, this latest shift back to maverick just looks like more of the same. He spent years sliding into line with Bush on economic policy and tax cuts for the rich. He turned against his own conscience and his own bill on immigration to please the right-wingers. He stuffed his campaign with lobbyists and Rove trainees, people he criticized (and was victimized by) in the past. And he picked for vice president a skilled user of the earmarks he condemns.
The only thing more silly would be if he'd picked someone who condemned those very earmarks while taking them. Oh, and she does. She must be possessed, too.
Yet once again, McCain claims to be an agent of change. Perhaps he was once. But these days, all John McCain changes is his mind.
